Description

Vacuum System Technician
The Accelerator Division at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Vacuum System Technician.
Description of directorate/division
The Accelerator Division is responsible for the design, construction, installation and commissioning of the ESS accelerator, in collaboration with partner institutions and other divisions of the ESS.
The vacuum team in the Specialised Technical Services Group is responsible for all technical vacuum systems at ESS working alongside partner institutions and other groups in the Accelerator, Target and Instruments and Neutron Beams Divisions developing the design of these systems including the definition of interfaces with other groups. The team is also responsible for the specification and procurement of vacuum equipment and the installation and commissioning of these vacuum systems during the construction of ESS.
Description of main responsibilities
• Assemble, test, certify and document the vacuum and other related systems and their components.
• Assist in the planning, installation, assembly, commissioning and operation of vacuum and other related systems and their components.
• Set-up, operate, calibrate and maintain process and test equipment and apparatus.
• Assist in the maintenance of documentation records for assembly, repair, testing and qualification of the vacuum and other related systems and their components.
• Develop procedures and documentation related to the design, fabrication, testing, and repair of vacuum and other related systems and their components.
• Maintain test and measurement data, travellers and any other documentation records related to the fabrication, testing and repair of vacuum and other related systems and their components.
• Use electronic and mechanical test and measurement equipment to verify vacuum system and component performance and integrity.
• Use computers to collect, record, and analyse data for acceptance, operation and maintenance of vacuum and other related systems and their components.
• Consolidate and record traveller data in a computer database.
• Ensure compliance with ESH and quality procedures and programs.
• Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of laboratory values and ethics.
• May be required to provide work direction to junior staff members and other trades/crafts for the installation, repair, testing of vacuum and other related systems and their components.
• May be required to participate in the development and communication of safety, quality and other procedures for vacuum and other related systems and their component assembly.
• Compliance with environmental, safety, health and quality program requirements.
• Maintenance of a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.
Qualifications
• Associate’s degree in mechanical technology or related technical field with at least 5 years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• While a mechanical aptitude is essential a working knowledge of electrical power, instrumentation and computers is desirable.
• Experience in working with vacuum systems, vacuum components and instrumentation and associated test equipment e.g. leak detectors, RGA's etc. preferably in an ultra high vacuum environment required.
• Experience in the construction, assembly, troubleshooting, repair, calibration, testing and operation of vacuum and related systems and components e.g. cryogenic, electrical power, instrumentation etc. required, with experience in accelerator operations an advantage.
• Experience in the use of mechanical and electronic test and measurement equipment required.
• Must have good written and oral communications skills.
• Must be selfmotivated and have good judgement.

Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden. Start date as soon as possible.

The European Spallation Source ERIC will design, build and operate a multi-disciplinary, large-scale research infrastructure based on the world’s most powerful neutron source. European Spallation Source, ESS, will provide scientists with unique and powerful neutron scattering instruments for the study of a large range of materials – from polymers and pharmaceuticals to membranes and molecules. ESS project is partnered by 17 European countries, and hosted by Sweden and Denmark. ESS will be built in Lund, Sweden, by a collaboration of European scientists and engineers. ESS is planned to produce the first neutrons by 2019. When the facility is in full operation 2025, ESS has around 450 employees.
